American School of Dubai: Great Little Masters 1
WESTERN ART HISTORY FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 2ND THROUGH 5TH
Children were introduced to the history of art from the Renaissance to Modern times, to understand, appreciate, and most importantly, to enjoy art. Through painting, sculpture, video and music, young artists were immersed into the lives and works of the Great Masters.

Michelangelo Study
Michelangelo spent 4 years painting the Sistine Chapel. In order to understand the difficulty Michelangelo faced while working many long hours looking upwards to paint the ceiling above, the children painted and drew on paper tapped beneath their classroom tables. The collective work was then hung from the classroom ceiling.
Leonardo da Vinci Study
Students learned about the proportions of the human body by studying Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man. The children enjoyed creating their own Vitruvian Man drawings by tracing each other.
Vincent van Gogh
During his short life, Vincent van Gogh painted numerous self-portraits. Students studied proportions and made a mirror image from their own photographs.

Jackson Pollack
Students studied the "action paintings" of abstract expressionist Jackson Pollack and created their own works using Pollack's process of pouring and dripping paint.
